Step 1: The Initial Consultation
Your journey begins with a consultation with a denturist or dentist. They’ll evaluate your oral health, discuss your options (complete or partial dentures), and explain the process.
You can expect:
- A review of your dental and medical history
- An oral examination
- Possible X-rays or impressions of your mouth

Step 2: Tooth Extraction (If Needed)
If you’re receiving full dentures and still have some remaining teeth, they may need to be extracted. Healing time varies, but temporary (immediate) dentures can often be provided while your gums heal.
Step 3: Fitting and Impressions
A mold of your mouth is taken to create dentures that are custom-fit to your gums, bite, and jaw shape. The better the fit, the more comfortable and natural the dentures will feel.
Step 4: Your First Fitting
You’ll try on your dentures and your denturist will make adjustments to ensure a snug, comfortable fit. This may take more than one visit.
Step 5: The Adjustment Period
New dentures can take some getting used to. You may experience:
- Minor soreness or discomfort
- Increased saliva production
- Slight speech changes
- Difficulty eating certain foods at first
These symptoms usually fade as your mouth adjusts. Follow any care tips provided by your denturist to ease the transition.
Step 6: Follow-Up Appointments
Routine check-ins are important. Your denturist will ensure your dentures continue to fit well and make further adjustments as needed.
